Truth & Reconciliation
Orange Shirt Day has become an annual opportunity across Canada to come together in the spirit of truth and reconciliation for generations of children to come, and to honour the survivors whose families and communities have been impacted by the residential school system.
Our Orange Shirt graphics are produced by artist Carey Newman Hayalthkin'geme (Kwakwaka'wakw/Coast Salish), designed to honour the children who died in residential schools. On the Heart and Hands design, the hearts express love for all those in unmarked graves and compassion for the families and communities who waited for them to be found. The small and colourful hands remind us of the uniqueness and beauty of every child. Taken together, they represent our commitment to listen to our hearts and use our hands to do the work that needs to be done.
Proceeds benefit the UVic Elders Engagement Fund, Witness Blanket Project and Orange Shirt Day Society.
