Carol Matthews set out to discover what bereavement meant to her after the loss of her husband. In Bereavement Days she explores bereavement within the context of their larger relationship, from the courtship and on through the marriage. This examination not only helped her endure terrible grief and develop a new appreciation of her marriage, it also helped her to accept and integrate his death into the story of their life together. Her account includes literary references, letters, conversations and reflections in five sections: grieving, longing, belonging, mourning and cleaving.
Carol was born in Vancouver, lived for many years in Montreal, and moved to Nanaimo with her husband, Mike, where she has lived since 1970. She has worked as a social worker, as Executive Director of Nanaimo Family Life and as instructor and Dean of Human Services and Community Education at Malaspina University-College (now VIU). She was awarded the ACCC National Award for Excellence in Leadership, an Honorary Doctorate of Letters Degree from VIU, the Order of B.C. and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Carol has published a collection of short stories and four works of memoir. Her short stories and reviews have appeared in literary journals such as Room, The New Quarterly, Grain, Malahat and Event. She has also edited a book of dog poetry called Victor?s Verses.
